McHugh served as construction manager for the expansion and renovation of 11 elementary and middle schools. The most significant work occurred at Hawthorne Elementary School, built in 1888, damaged by fire in 1917, and refurbished in 1921. McHugh constructed a new wing then rebuilt Hawthorne in sections while school remained in session. The construction safety program McHugh developed for Elmhurst’s York High School was equally effective for these smaller schools.

The renovations to Thompson Hall included removal and replacement of the exterior enclosure system; replacement of the HVAC systems on each floor; and providing new finishes in the dorm rooms. Originally constructed in 1969, Thompson Hall houses 630 dorm rooms over 19 floors and was clad in 170,000 sf of wall panels and windows. Crews removed the old system and installed 125,000 sf of new glass curtainwall and 45,000 sf of new rain screen metal panel wall system.
Additional exterior work included the installation of new canopies, entry doors and hardware, and new roofs. Interior work included coordination of asbestos removal with the University’s abatement contractor; selective demolition to provide access for the exterior wall replacement; and installation of new HVAC systems, drywall, carpet, paint, and window coverings.

McHugh transformed this former office building into the flagship Virgin Hotel. The 27-story landmarked Old Dearborn Bank Building at 203 North Wabash Avenue was completely gutted and reconfigured to include 250 guestrooms, meeting and event spaces, spa with fitness center, and several destination restaurants and bars.

Located at 39 South LaSalle, the new Kimpton property The Gray will bring new life to the former New York Life Insurance Building, which was considered one of Chicago’s most endangered buildings by Preservation Chicago. Originally constructed around 1893, with additions in 1898 and 1903, the building is one of the earliest examples of steel framed buildings in the Chicago area.

The first phase of the project included the renovation of the hotel’s top six floors including both typical guestrooms and specialty suites - 150 room in total. The rooms were completely gutted with new ceilings installed as well as new wallcoverings, carpet, and custom built-in modular furniture.

After sitting shuttered for almost a decade, the historic Blackstone Hotel reopened to new glory and strong reviews from architectural critics and the hospitality industry. The massive renovation of the Blackstone, built in 1910, took just 22 months to complete, despite the fact that McHugh gutted the hotel to its skeleton save for the historic areas which were restored.

McHugh performed a large-scale renovation of the Hyatt Regency Chicago’s iconic glass box lobby for repeat client Hyatt Hotels. The transformation of the 60,000 sf space reshaped the guest experience for arrival, check-in, and dining. The first phase of this carefully scheduled project included construction of Market Chicago, a new grab-and-go dining facility; renovations to the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, Stetson’s Modern Steak + Sushi; and the renovation of the reception facilities.

Making our mark in Chicago’s ritziest neighborhood, McHugh performed a large-scale renovation at the Hyatt Chicago Magnificent Mile (formerly the Wyndham) for owner Sunstone Hotels. Virtually the entire facility received a dramatic refurbishment including the 419 guest rooms, meeting and banquet space, the lobby, the indoor pool, and fitness center.

This full renovation of the former Mile North included 215 guest rooms and 28 guest corridors. New showers, vanities, tile and toilet accessories were installed in the bathrooms, and the rooms feature new carpet, wall coverings, paint, lighting, and other FF&E. The lobby, meeting rooms, and public lavatories were also renovated. Crews converted a private dining area on the first floor to a fitness center, and the former fitness center into a new guest room.

McHugh and joint venture partner, Ornelas Construction, completed the redevelopment of the Terminal 5 concessions area at O'Hare International Airport. Crews demolished and reconfigured space within the existing concessions area and installed new MEP systems, drywall, and flooring, Work also included a redesigned, more efficient TSA checkpoint and features new lighting, signage, fixtures and other first class amenities while incorporating sustainable and recycled materials.
