This latest addition to the University’s campus was proposed by the architect, Rafael Vinoly, as “an opportunity for focused construction that would meet the institution’s long term needs” and the resulting design was a 13-story, 1.2 million square foot facility that spans two city blocks with six separate concrete core walls. McHugh placed over 43,000 cubic yards of concrete. Crews installed over 63,000 square feet of foundation walls around the earth retention raker beams during the winter months – each wall is 20-feet tall. The design called for strict flatness tolerances for the floors – within 7/10 of an inch – due to the sensitivity of the materials and equipment the facility will house.

To meet the challenge of placing over 16,000 cubic yards of concrete over 33 stories on this cramped urban site, McHugh marshaled its expertise to design a unique concrete placing device to allow for pouring the core without using a full-sized placing boom. Other innovations included the use of a self-climbing core form system that rose without the need for any crane time and designing the core forms with a working platform to accommodate loads from reinforcing steel laydown and suspended access stairs.

Working with general contractor Linn-Mathis, McHugh crews added a new 313,000 sf, seven-story, cast-in-place structure adjacent to the existing 10-story building, and also performed repairs to the concrete in the existing structure. Designed by Hartshorne Plunkard Architects, 1KFulton offers highly efficient floor plates and designer interior common areas. Anchor tenant at the development is Google’s Chicago Office.
